advice on developing a measure for expressive language development

Dear friends,
     My colleague and co-author Yumiko Tanaka Welty has a probable  
opportunity to collect language samples from Japanese mother-child  
dyads and to develop measures for the children's expressive language  
development based on these speech samples. She would be very grateful  
for suggestions about books and papers to read that might give her  
useful ideas towards developing such a set of measures. Do you have a  
few minutes to help?
