Call for Submission:
‘Computational Modeling of Bilingualism’
A Special Issue in Bilingualism: Language and Cognition

While a number of computational models have previously been applied to
the study of bilingualism, the interaction between modelers and
bilingual researchers has been limited, and progress has been slow
compared with advances in the computational modeling of monolingual
representation and acquisition. At the same time, however, researchers
have noted the importance of computational models in identifying
mechanisms underlying bilingual language representation and processing
(Dijkstra & van Heuven, 2002; Roelofs & Verhoef, 2006; Thomas & van
Heuven, 2005) and in capturing developmental patterns across the
lifespan of the bilingual learner (French & Jacquet, 2004; Hernandez,
Li, & MacWhinney, 2005; Li & Farkas, 2002; Zhao & Li, 2010).

In this Special Issue for Bilingualism: Language and Cognition
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bilingualism:_Language_and_Cognition),
we propose to integrate research findings from recent computational
studies of bilingualism, including but not limited to models of
simultaneous and sequential L1-L2 acquisition, bilingual language
competition and interaction, bilingual speech production, and L1-L2
language attrition and relearning. Models that rely on different
computational architectures and algorithms are welcome.

Please submit a one-page abstract (~200 words) of your proposed
manuscript to Ping Li via email (pul8 at psu.edu) by October 31, 2010.
Abstracts will be reviewed with regard to their fit to the aims and
scope of both the journal and the Special Issue. Authors will be
notified of the decisions on their abstracts by Dec. 31, 2010.
Full-article submissions will be invited and will undergo the
journal’s regular review process in 2011.
