Bilingual CDI

Dear Francesca,

There's not a bilingual version per se, because each language adaptation is somewhat different to be appropriate for each language. So, parents need to look at one CDI for each language. If there were one universal list, one could mark off words known in either language.

But even then, we would bump into the second issue implied by your question: there are no norms (to my knowledge) for bilingual children.

The closest I know is the kind of exercise my colleagues and I did a while back and that has been done by others since, which is to make a careful mapping (not so easy!) of two CDIs, so one can tell when a child knows a word, and when she or he knows it in one or two languages. Then you have a variety of ways of counting the "sum" of the bilingual's knowledge and compare it *approximately* to age-graded levels of knowledge in each single language (that is, each single language for which there are norms).

I presume you have already checked the UCSD website of CDIs in different languages http://www.sci.sdsu.edu/cdi/adaptations.htm

Which languages are you looking to find CDIs and CDI-combinations for?

Best wishes,
Barbara
