Application Deadline: December 3, 2018

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Rochester welcomes applicants for a tenure track faculty position. The appointment begins July 1, 2019. The position is open rank, with a preference for candidates at the level of Associate Professor. Strong junior candidates, with Ph.D. in hand, will also be considered. The opening is in the area of Syntax, though exceptionally strong candidates in closely related fields may be considered.

Applicants must have a record of excellence in both teaching and research. The most successful applicants will have solid expertise in formal theory coupled with a strong empirical and/or computational orientation, employing empirical or computational methodologies to examine data and topics in contemporary issues in linguistics. This may take the form of active engagement in linguistic fieldwork, the application of data sciences techniques to linguistic corpora, experimental investigation, or computational methodology to name but a few. Evidence of an additional area of expertise beyond syntax is most welcome and highly valued (e.g., morphology, semantics, in-depth knowledge of a language family, sociolinguistics), to leverage existing research in or outside the department.

A Ph.D. in Linguistics or in another closely-related area is required; however, a candidate should be able to teach core linguistics courses in a vigorous undergraduate program and to contribute to Masters and PhD programs in Linguistics grounded in cross-disciplinary, collaborative work, and incorporating contemporary issues and practices.

The Department of Linguistics offers a Ph.D. Program, MA programs in Linguistics and in Language Documentation and Description, an MS program in Computational Linguistics (offered jointly with Computer Science), and a BA in Linguistics. The department most highly values work which links to other departments and programs in the strong interdisciplinary language community at the University of Rochester. The ideal candidate will have research interests that complement those of faculty in the Department of Linguistics and the broader Rochester language community. The Department of Linguistics is affiliated with the Center for Language Sciences, which includes researchers interested in language and cognition from several departments and programs across the University, including Arts and Sciences, Engineering, the Medical School and the Eastman School of Music.

For fullest consideration, a completed application should be submitted by 3 December 2018.
