That news item is a bit confusing.  In the US (and pretty much the rest of the English using world) 'Ms' is a common and officially permitted title, but there is no ban on 'Miss' (or 'Mrs.').

Incidentally, the English title 'Miss' is not a perfect translation of the French 'Mademoiselle'. There are a number of differences in use. The English title 'Mrs' is unusual in world terms for being now restricted to married women. In the past it was used (like French 'Madame' and German 'Frau') to any mature woman regardless of her marital status. I think myself that we should have argued in the 1970s for an extensive of 'Mrs' rather than developing a 3rd title, which has only added to the complexity of title choice for women.

I also think we could do without the whole title thing (though I do use the one I worked for in my sig!).

Since Miss is prohibited in US documents , how can you explain its actual use in official documents such as the online documents?? and immigration documents like the ones used by the US embassy In Algeria ???
