CAPE TOWN – The Freedom Front Plus (FF+) says a change in the language
policy at Stellenbosch University would be unconstitutional.

This comes as student transformation group Open Stellenbosch is calling for
the institution to offer more classes in English as opposed to Afrikaans.

The chairperson for Parliament's higher education committee, Yvonne Phosa
says management will have to explain their language policy as it excludes
groups who don't understand the language.

However leader of the FF+ Pieter Mulder says university management should
not change Afrikaans as the main medium of instruction.

“Article 29 of the Constitution says it’s possible to have a university and
you study in your mother tongue. We’ve got 38 university campuses at this
stage, 36 of them are predominately English already.”
