atlas and phonetic symbols

I am trying out the demo version of Atlas-ti on some linguistic interviews.  I
typed the docs. in Microsoft Word and saved them as plain text documents with
line breaks in order to transfer them to atlas-ti.  When I did that the
phonetic symbols were corrupted and no longer express what I need them to.
Can I do something differently to keep the symbols?
