Yes, there actually is a linguistic label for this phenomenon. It's
called ameliorative, or sometimes just meliorative, defined as
"(Change) by which a word develops a more favourable sense" (P.
Matthews 1997, _Concise Oxford Dictionary of Linguistics_).
