[Linganth] video about contact languages

Hi Catherine et al.,

My students were able to stream the full video on Kanopy, a digital streaming platform that our college library subscribes to.

The video was very useful but relies heavily on talking-head interviews and focus group interactions. I would’ve loved more examples of spontaneous language use.

Cheers,
Rudi

Hi y'all,

Here is a short clip about (and partially in) Hawaiian Creole English (known in Hawaiʻi as Pidgin):

Hawaii Pidgin: The Voice of Hawaii (4:27): https://youtu.be/O7X9AAeDCr4

There is a full length version (I haven't seen it but I assume it's the same quality as the clip) available to rent streaming at: https://www.newday.com/film/pidgin-voice-hawaii

Hope this is helpful,
-Catherine

Story of English, Program 9 is the best one that I know of, with examples of Tok Pisin, Jamaican Krio and West African Kriol. Has scene with Braithwaite talking about Nation Language and scenes of Dub poet in London. Available on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0z5bdrB_Nts

I would like to hear of any more recent videos, if anyone knows of them.

Hello all,

Does anyone have suggestions for good videos about contact languages/pidgins/creoles to use in the classroom? I’d like my students to actually hear some of these languages being spoken and see a concrete example.

Thank you!

Robin
