As I understand it, OUP does not actually make money directly out of the OED, though of course it helps enormously in terms of prestige etc. 

The Dixon and Aikhenvald volumes were also not published in order to make money as such, but because OUP, in the person of John Davey (who has single-handedly done more for the linguistics cause than almost any publisher), thought they were important. La Trobe also made a contribution towards the publication expenses - the sort of thing which does help when trying to encourage publishers to publish grammars. Some  Universities and other research-funding bodies may make this kind of grant if asked.........
