        I am currently doing research into the implmentation of a GB parser in
Prolog with a view to using it as a teaching aid. I would greatly appreciate any
 advice,references or URLs for sites where information is available.

Hello,
Would some of the LINGUIST readers be so kind as to pull me out of the
following puzzles re. functionalism?
1. Is there an unmovable fence for the definition of functional linguistics?
2. Am I right that there are two aspects of defining language, functional and
   "?" ?
3. What's the hierarchical relationship between
       functionalist school
         prague school
         English tradition
         Firth
         Halliday
         FSP
         FG
         applied linguistics
4. Is there any internet database of, about functionalist linguistics?
I would greatly appreciate receiving any responses.

I am interested to hear about anyone who has (had) hand-on experience
with computerized assisted teaching of French, including multimedia
tools.  What material did you use (name of program if possible)?  How
would you rate it? What level and what purpose did it serve (type of
course)?......

Subject:       Q. basic level categories in language acquisition
 
    A question about language acquisition in languages other than
English came up in a psychology class on concepts and categories.
We had read a chapter by Ellen Markman which discussed a possible
constraint on language learning: Children assume an unknown word
refers to a basic level category (i.e. dog not animal or poodle).
The chapter also reviewed some fairly convincing evidence
that this was so in English. Someone asked if the same thing happened
in other languages. My bet is that it does, but I thought I should
check.
    Do you know of any evidence that children learning langauges
other than English tend to assume (or tend not to assume) an unknown
word refers to a basic level category?
