The English Department at Humboldt State University has an opening for
a one-year, full-time leave replacement in language studies beginning
August 1995 (contingent on available funding). Assistant Professor level,
salary range: $32,712-$35,868. PhD in English/Linguistics with an
emphasis in applied linguistics. Must be able to teach language study
and TESL courses for undergraduate majors and teacher preparation
students. Minor specialty in literature or composition desirable. To

Applications are invited for a 3-year postdoctoral research post at the
University of Ulster at Jordanstown, N Ireland. The researcher will be
working on a research project on 'Language Acquisition in Conditions of
Variable Input' which aims to establish how children handle dialect variation
which they encounter in the input. The project is funded by the UK
Economic and Social Research Council.
Applicants should have (or be about to complete) a PhD in linguistics or
the psychology of language, preferably with a dissertation topic in the
areas of syntactic theory, first language acquisition or sociolinguistics.
Preference may be given to candidates who have studied Principles and
Parameters Theory and its application to first language acquisition,
since this is the framework on which the study is based.
The salary scale is in the range 14,756-25,735 pounds sterling.

Qualifications: Master's Degree required prior to beginning of the Fall,
1995 semester. Previous experience directing forensics and working with
culturally diverse students preferred; prior teaching experience at the
university level preferred; demonstrated commitment to excellence in
teaching.
Responsibilites: Direct a forensics program that incorporates both
intercollegiate debate and individual events competition. Supervise
several graduate assistant coaches. Ability to teach one or more
courses in the area of rhetoric desired.

WHAT? - EFL Fellows undertake a range of projects aimed at enhancing

quality of English language education throughout the region.
Some of their accomplishments since 1991 include:
- Organizing successful seminars to develop master teachers in Slovenia;
- presenting courses in Business English, Business and Management, amd
Quality Management Training to MBA students at Warsaw University and
at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland;
- facilitating the organization of a nation-wide TESOL affiliate in
Russia;
- organizng local teachers to develop EFL materials for use in elementary
and seconday school classrooms throughout Latvia;
- sponsoring a variety of courses and lectures for in-service teachers
at America House in Kiev, Ukraine, as featured on the front page of a
major Ukrainian daily;
- helping to develop and deliver model training programs for teachers
in requalification programs in Lithuania.
