Colloquium on Syntax and Varieties
University of Duesseldorf
6-8 July 1995

Synchronically, the dialectal and spoken colloquial varieties of
(at least the major European) languages seem to contain a range of
syntactic structures that are absent from the corresponding
(written-oriented) standard varieties. Historically, the history
of these languages shows a discontinuity in that structures
present in an earlier pre-standard, dialectal situation were not
taken over into the standard languages.

The purpose of this symposium is to determine to which extent it
is possible to identify factors in this selection process that are
independent of language specific structural histories (although
imbedded in them) but are rather dependent on the nature, function,
pragmatics, and ideology of dialects and standards.

Contributions should include the effect of "grammarians",
processes going on in present day varieties as well as historical
varietal "filtering" processes.

Please let me have a title and a one-page abstract.

HILP2 - Amsterdam Phonology Conference - Times and Venues

Most events take in the Bungehuis - one block behind the Royal Palace,
in the centre of Amsterdam. From the Royal Palace - on every tourist
map - you take the street on the left side of the front of the palace -
Paleisstraat - and go two blocks (crossing the Nieuwezijdsvoorburgwal).
The next street is the Spuistraat, and the Bungehuis is on the lefthan
corner across the street.
