At The University of Birmingham, in the School of
Computer Science, there is a small group working on
various aspects of Speech and Natural Language
Processing. The group is led by Drs Peter Hancox and
William Edmondson. Further details of their work, and
of the School, can be found on the web:

http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk

Dr William Edmondson and two existing PhD students are
working on a cognitive model of language processing, with
specific interest in speech synthesis and recognition.
However, the model is not restricted to speech behaviour.
We seek a student to look specifically at the broader
linguistic aspects of the model. The model - PANTOME -
is a functional model, and the primary research questions
concern the computational and theoretical distinctions
between this model and both symbolic models and neural
net models. Within this outline there is plenty of scope
for a student to identify their own research question
in accordance with their interests, skills, and prior
training.

Potential applicants will find on the web the application
details they need, including a form. Additionally, you are
encouraged to email William Edmondson and/or Peter Hancox
(whe at cs.bham.ac.uk & pjh at cs.bham.ac.uk).
