Hi!  We are trying to do some work on Oto(e) down here at Oklahoma State
and have been having some trouble getting grammars, dictionaries,
books of songs and especially tapes of the language.
We know that some work has been done, but would really appreciate
some help in locating some of the resources that are oout there.

Subject:  Data Request: Computer Words

Computers have become a fact of life in most places (at least,
most of the places I'm familiar with).  I have become curious
about how different languages deal with computer words.  Have new
"native" words been created in these languages, or are loanwords
used?

For example, I'm currently living on the Hualapai Indian
Reservation in Arizona, United States.  In Hwalbay (Hualapai,
Walapai), there are two native words for _computer_:
     qambaybu:jo
          place to store brains [qambay (= brain) + bu:(k) (= to
          store) + j (= plural suffix) + o (= locative suffix)]
     qambayjigwa:jo
          place to put away brains [qambay (= brain) + jigwa(k)
          (= to put away) + j (= plural suffix) + o (= locative
          suffix)]

(Hwalbay is an SOV language, thus the "word order."  The dropped
_k_ at the end of verbs indicates the infinitive form.  With four
exceptions, Hwalbay uses IPA characters for the writing system;
the _j_ above is IPA _d3_, the _y_ above is IPA _j_.  _ay_ is a
diphthong, IPA _aj_.)

I am not aware of any other "computer" terms in Hwalbay, though
they might exist.

Some other languages are:

English
     computer
          thing that computes or calculates [comput(e) (= to
          compute or calculate) + -er (= agentive suffix)]

Espan~ol (Spanish)
     calculadora
          ? [ ? ]

Deutsch (High (?) German)
     Computer
          ? [English loanword?]

Can anyone provide the word _computer_ from other languages, along
with literal meanings and etymologies if possible?  Any other
computer-related words would be welcome, too.  As usual, I will
post a summary to the list.
