We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

Dear everyone,

Any help you can provide with the following would be very gratefully
received. I've had a request from a second year doctoral student in
Iraq for references to books in the following areas - I don't really
work in these areas of linguistics myself (and the range does seem
rather broad) - does anyone know of good textbooks in:

comprehension, communication theory, sense and meaning,
intelligibility, encoding.

If anyone knows of a good basic text book that covers most of these,
even better.

Thanks in advance - please contact me directly: s.goodman at open.ac.uk

Dear Linguisters,

does anybody know if there is an electronic version of the Bible on
the net available for queries, etc. Or a site of Biblical studies?

I promise to post a summary.

Thank you very much.

I'm putting together a polyglot version of the Gospel of Luke,
containing Old, Middle, and Modern English. The one character that
I'm having problems with is the Middle English "yogh". I know the
HTML code is &y; or &yogh;, but I'm finding that although Netscape can
correctly display the eth, thorn, etc., it can't do the yogh.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
