this is to let colleagues know about a very useful reference
book i've just received. it's "indigenous languages of the
americas: a bibliography of dissertations and theses," by
robert singerman. the book is published by the scarecrow
press, inc.: 4720 boston way, lanham, maryland 20706, usa,
or 4 pleydell gardens, folkstone, kent ct20 2dn, england.
the book brings together references to over 1,600 m.a.
theses and phd dissertation from u.s., canadian, and british
institutions. the bibliography is divided by language
family for north american languages (salishan, yukian
muskogean, etc.). there is a chapter on mesoamerican
languages and one on south american and caribbean
languages. the bibliography covers the hundred years
from 1892-1992. if a thesis or dissertation was published,
singerman documents this and provides the reference. singerman
is a professional bibliographer, and it shows in the precision
and consistency of detail in the references. there is a
wealth of material in this volume.

I am writing to comment on the delay in the current (double) issue of
Language in the Judicial Process. Just as we were about to go online, the
University of Tennessee laid off with no warning 50+ employees of the UT
computing center, including David Hale, the Technical Editor of LJP. I
don't yet know whether he will be able to keep an internet account.
Further, consulting assistance is now available only at $50 per hour.
 
I may have to learn enough HTML to get this issue out. I'll keep you posted.
