     The Department of Japanese Studies of Salem-Teikyo
University invites applications for an instructor of
Japanese, beginning August, 1997. Responsibilities
include teaching 6 modules (24 credit hours) and doing
research for 2 modules (2 months) per year. We are
seeking a person who can teach undergraduate Japanese
language courses for non-native Japanese including
"Kokugo" as a cultural identity of the Japanese.
Applicants must have native fluency in Japanese and a
terminal degree in the relevant fields. Yaruki no aru
kata, mattemasu!

The Department of Linguistics at Oakland University invites applications
for a tenure track assistant professor with a specialization in ESL
beginning August 15, 1997. The position requires a Ph.D. in Linguistics, a
strong theoretical background, and a commitment to research and teaching.
Preference will be given to candidates with additional expertise in
phonetics and phonology and/or language arts education.  The appointee
will also be expected to teach courses in general education and in the
core areas of linguistics.  Curriculum vitae, samples of work and three
letters of reference should be sent to:  Dr. Peter J. Binkert, Chair,
Search Committee, Department of Linguistics, Oakland University,
Rochester, MI 48309-4401.  To ensure full consideration, applications
should be received by February 15, 1997.  Preliminary interviews with
members of the search committee will be held at the LSA meeting in
Chicago, January 2-5, 1997; candidates who are able to attend the meeting

HELP NEEDED FOR MULTILINGUAL DATA CONVERSION PROJECTS:
 
Inso Corporation, a publisher of electronic reference databases
located in Boston, MA, is looking for linguists with data conversion
skills to convert electronic bilingual and multilingual dictionaries
to SGML. Special consideration for these contract positions will be
given to people with a background in Italian, Dutch, Portuguese and/or
who have text processing skills (sed, awk, perl). SGML knowledge is
helpful, but we are willing to train. Applicants from any geographic
locatino will be considered, as long as they have internet access and
proper equipment.
