       FACULTY POSITION IN PSYCHOLINGUISTICS
       University of California, Irvine

The Department of Linguistics and the Department of Cognitive
Sciences at the University of California, Irvine invite
applications for tenure-track Assistant Professor level position
in the area of psycholinguistics, with a starting date of July 1,
1997.  Candidates should be prepared to accept a joint
appointment in both departments, and to contribute to the
teaching and research missions of both.  Candidates are expected
to have a strong record of research accomplishment commensurate
with their academic experience, and a serious commitment to
undergraduate and graduate teaching.

LECTURER

SCHOOL OF EUROPEAN LANGUAGES AND CENTRE FOR LINGUISTICS
(DEPARTMENT OF GERMAN)

Applications are invited for a fixed-term appointment to the
above position for an initial period of 3 years from 1 February
1997 with prospects of re- appointment. The School, comprising
the departments of French, German, Italian, and the Centre for
Linguistics, has 15 academic staff, of whom 3 are in the
Department of German.

The appointee will be expected to teach units at all levels of
the under- graduate curriculum including honours in German and
European Studies, to act as co-ordinator of undergraduate
courses, to supervise honours and postgraduate students, to
undertake research, to participate in the development of
innovative courses and, where appropriate, in departmental
administration, to have the ability to participate in a friendly,
co-operative and collegial inter- disciplinary academic
environment, and be willing to liaise with schools, professional
bodies and relevant community organisations.

Applicants must have:

* a PhD in a relevant area of German or European Studies (or one
close to completion)

* a thorough command of the German language and the ability to
teach German language courses to Honours level;

* the ability to teach in 19th and 20th century German
literature, society and culture courses; * the ability to teach
in the Contemporary European Studies course (ES100) and
contribute to its further development;

* demonstrated ability to publish research.

Any of the following would be an advantage:

* the capacity to contribute to the upper levels of the School's
interdisciplinary programme in European Studies:
e.g. familiarity with the history of Europe and the canon of
European literature since the Renaissance;

* knowledge of a European language other than English and German;

* experience in teaching and administration of undergraduate
* courses.

In appropriate circumstances the options of job-sharing or
fractional appointments may be considered.
