We'd appreciate your limiting conference announcements to 150 lines,
so that we can post more than 1 per issue. Please consider omitting
information useful only to attendees, such as information on housing,
transportation, or rooms and times of sessions. Please do not use
abbreviations or acronyms for your conference unless you explain
them in your text. Many people outside your area of specialization
will not recognize them. Thank you for your cooperation.

A conference at the University of Hartford

The Center for Research and Documentation on World Language Problems
(CRD), based at the University of Hartford, is considering sponsoring
a conference on "Language and the Internet" on Tuesday and Wednesday,
May 27 and 28, or Thursday and Friday, June 12 and 13, 1997. The
Center would invite specialists from around the country and around the
world to attend the conference, and others might be linked in
electronically.

The conference would consider three major questions:

a. Language Choice. What effect is the widespread use of English
through the Internet likely to have on the situation of English
language and of other languages across the world? What are the
prospects for langauges other than English as languages of the
Internet?

b. Pragmatics and Communications Strategies. What are the rules of
linguistic behavior, of genre, of address, that govern communication
on the Internet, and how are they evolving?

c. Language Learning. How can the Internet be used for the teaching
and learning of foreign languages?

We are interested in knowing:

a. Whether you would be interested in attending such a conference, on
one or other of those dates (indicate which of them work for you).

b. Whether you would be willing to read a paper at the conference. If
so, please send us a brief one-paragraph proposal.

c. Whether you would be interested in participating electronically if
you could not be with us in person.

Send your response to a University of Hartford contact or to
tonkin at hartford.uhavax.edu (Humphrey Tonkin, President, University of
Hartford, West Hartford CT 06117 USA). (Do *not* reply to the poster,
please.)

Please share this with your Internet contacts.
