We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

Subject: Q: Word Order

Greetings!

This is a query regarding the order of predicate head with respect to
arguments in SOV languages. The query relates to ditransitive
predicates such as 'give' and 'put'.

(1) Which languages always have the order:

        Subject Direct-Object Indirect-Object Verb.

(2) Which languages always have the order:

        Subject Direct-Object Verb Indirect Object.

(3) Are there any languages that optionally or predictably vary
between these two orders?

Thanks.

Paul de Lacy.

For a student planning to study the Caribs of Dominica:

Does anyone know the name of the French-based creole spoken by the
present-day Carib people of Dominica?

Has anyone worked on this language? Are there any papers, grammars,
or dictionaries concerning it?

many thanks,
Marcia Haag

Dear Sirs,

I work as a translator in South America. I am quite interested (as a
user) in machine translation.

I have only recently started using Globalink Power Translator
for English to French and vice versa. If anyone has any tips on better
programs or techniques on using it or other translation programs, please
E-mail me.

I would also be interested in knowing of any terminology data
banks between French and the following languages: English, Dutch and
Portuguese (preferably Brazilian).

Thank you,

Bart
