     Many IsCLL6 participants have expressed their concern over the fact
that both IACL-7/NACCL-10 and IsCLL6 have chosen 12/31/1997 as deadline for
abstracts.  IsCLL6 Organizing Committee has thus decided to extend the
submission deadline from December 31, 1997 to Jannary 20, 1998.

Subject:  First High Desert Student Conference in Linguistics

                   ***** CALL FOR PAPERS *****

        First High Desert Student Conference in Linguistics
                      Albuquerque, New Mexico
                          April 3-4, 1998


The goal of the conference is to provide graduate students in
linguistics and related fields with the opportunity to present their
original research in an open forum, and to meet and exchange ideas with
students from other institutions.

The conference will take place over two days, Friday April 3rd and
Saturday April 4th, on the campus of the University of New Mexico, in
Albuquerque.

Along with a general session, there will also be a **Special Session** on the
relationship between Cognitive and Functional approaches to linguistics.

In the afternoon of the 3rd, there will be a talk from our invited
**Keynote Speaker**, Joan Bybee (Univ. of New Mexico).

Abstracts are invited from students for talks on any topic in linguistics.
Talks will be 20 minutes, with 10 minutes for discussion. Individuals may
submit abstracts for one single and one co-authored paper.

### Submitting Your Abstract by Snail Mail ###

Please submit three copies of a one-page, 500 word anonymous abstract. A
separate page for data and references may be added.  Include a 3x5 card
with the following information:

        # your name
        # your affiliation
        # your snail-mail address, e-mail address and phone number
        # title of your paper
        # indication of whether the paper is for the general session or the
          special session

Abstracts should be mailed to:

### General Information ###

Notification of acceptance will happen in mid-February. Crash space and
transportation in Albuquerque will be available for participants on a
first-come first-served basis.

Sign Language interpretation will be provided for all talks.
