We are now looking for ESL instructors to teach Laboratory English and
English conversation classes at Yeungnam University's Foreign Language
Institute, starting September 1, 1997.  The instructor will teach 20 hours
per week, usually four to six hours a day, Monday through Friday, during the
contract period.  The instructor will be provided with a furnished
apartment.  The annual salary will be 17,000,000 Korean Won (approximately
US$19,000) plus severance pay of one-month salary.  To apply for the

Post-doc position in Psycholinguistics

The Department of German Language and Linguistics at the Humboldt
Universtity of Berlin, Germany is offering a position as research
assistant in the area of psycholinguistics from September 1997,  for at
least two years. The project is being supported by a grant from the
Deutsche Forschung Gemeinschaft (DFG).
PhD in psychology, preferrably in psycholinguistics is required, as well
as expertise in experimental psychology. Theoretical knowledge in the
field of language processing a distinct advantage.

Candidates will be expected to work in the following areas:
1)Assistance in the performance and evaluation of an experiment based
research project in the area of language production.=20
2)Application of theory based text models of speech production, as well
as the adaptation of these models based on empirie.
3)Conceptualisation, development and performance, as well as written
documentation of experiments.=20
4)Participation in the publishing of the results.=20
5)Collaboration with other partner projects is expected.

The English Department, PENDING FINAL APPROVAL OF THE COLLEGE
BOARD, will be allowed to advertise the following position within a
few weeks. Because of the summer recess, I am afraid many of you might
miss it, and therefore I have gotten permission to put this
pre-advertisement on e-mail lists. I would appreciate it very much if
you would bring it to the attention of suitable candidates.

I estimate that the official advertisement in Dutch newspapers (and on
e-mail lists)  will come out in the middle of next month and that the
application deadline is middle of August. Interviews will probably be
held in September. The appointment will be per January 1998 at the

POSITION of  Professor of English Language

The Department of English Language and Literature offers courses to
students taking English as a main subject as well as to students from
other disciplines (in all ca 380 students). English language and
language acquisition are among the major subjects of the curriculum,
both in the first and in the higher years. The department is actively
contributing to innovations in the fields of writing and
computer-assisted instruction and learning.

The research of the department's language section takes place within
the framework of the Centre for Language and Cognition (CLCG) of the
Faculty of Arts, and participates in the interfaculty Graduate School
for Behavioral and Cognitive Neurosciences (BCN). The research taking
place under the umbrella of the Chair of English comprises the
following areas: linguistic theory, descriptive linguistics and
language variation, language and language behaviour.

Job description
carrying out, stimulating and leading research in the field of
   English language and linguistics. The professor will be expected to
   participate in directing a research theme in the CLCG.

supervising doctoral dissertations.

teaching English language and linguistics and proficiency at all
levels. The `doctoral phase' includes courses within the Faculty's new
translation and applied linguistics specialisations. Proficiency is
taught to students taking English as a main subject as well as to students
from other disciplines.

contributing to the management and organisation of the
   Department and the Faculty.

leading a team of linguists and proficiency instructors.

Requirements
   an academic degree in English Language and Literature and an
   English language PhD.

a thorough grounding in theoretical linguistics coupled with an
interest in empirical and applied linguistic research and/or
interdisciplinary research.

wide research experience, as demonstrated in publications in
international journals.

experience with initiating and supervising research, including doctoral
dissertations.

proven affinity with and wide-ranging experience in teaching English
language and proficiency at an academic level; proven didactic talents.

proven management skills.

proven ability to work in a team.

fluency in the Dutch language or a willingness to achieve fluency
within two years of appointment.

The salary will be in accordance with the salary scale for full professors
(between NLG 8,066 and NLG 11,824 gross per month).

Subject:  part-time temporary lectureships

The Department of Human Development at California State University,
Hayward, expects to have one or more part-time temporary lectureships
available for the 1997-98 academic year. We have a position open for Fall
quarter, which begins September 25, 1997.

The Department is interdisciplinary and is presently seeking a linguist to
join in a team-taught symposium course and to teach two seminars
co-requisite with the symposium. The fall symposium deals with the
construction of knowledge.

Candidates must hold at least the Master's Degree. Those holding a Ph.D or
Ed.D. are preferred.
