PHONETICS

Jessen, Michael, PHONETICS AND PHONOLOGY OF THE TENSE AND LAX
OBSTRUENTS IN GERMAN (Cornell Dissertation, submitted August 1996).
289 pp., spiral-bound COST: $12.00

Acoustic phonetic investigation of the opposition /p,t,k,f,s/
vs. /b,d,g,v,z/ in German, focussing on aspiration duration (in
stops), total duration (in fricatives), voicing, and F0-perturbation
as well as H1-H2 at vowel onset. An argument is made for reconsidering
the Jakobsonian feature [tense]. Stops constitute a typology between
[voice] (e.g. Russian) and [tense] (e.g. German, English), while
fricatives universally tend towards a combined use of voicing and
tenseness.
