organizing its 15th International Congress on Cybernetics which is to
be held in Namur (Belgium) from 24 to 28 August 1998. The Association
has decided to choose the formula of a congress composed of several
symposia. The working languages of the Congress are English and
French.

One of the organized symposia is "Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive
Science, and Philosophy for Social Progress". The preferable language
of the symposium is English.

The symposium has three main goals:
(a) to analyse how the studies in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and
Cognitive Science may contribute to social progress;
(b) to demonstrate the benefits of interdisciplinary approaches for
the theory and practice;
(c) to contribute to extending the sphere of application of effective
ideas.

The submissions describing theoretical and/or social aspects of the
researches on, in particular, natural-language interfaces, textual
knowledge bases, intelligent text summarization, machine translation
and interpretation, expert systems (for instance, pertaining to
medicine or law), intelligent tutoring systems (in particular,
destined for learning languages), knowledge representation systems,
computer vision, conceptual representations of visual images will be
appreciated.

The papers investigating problems by means of formal methods will be
greatly appreciated, but a necessary condition of acceptance is as
follows: a paper explicitly shows the significance of formal methods
for making some contribution to human progress.

As concerns Cognitive Science, the submissions considering general
mechanisms of language learning and comprehension, first of all,
mechanisms of understanding metaphors and irregular texts would be of
particular interest.

Studies on AI and Cognitive Science are interrelated with a number of
philosophical subjects. The papers discussing the questions of
Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Communication (including
Philosophy of Teaching), and the questions of modeling consciousness
may be submitted.

It is planned to organize several Special Focus Sessions, in
particular, on the following subjects:

- Information Representation Systems Based on Natural Language;
- Ideas and Methods of Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science
in Education;
- Applied Intelligent Systems.

Submission of Papers

Intending authors should submit by December 15, 1997 via regular mail
the abstracts of their communications (one complete single-spaced
page, A4, 12pt) and the filled in preliminary registration forms to
each of the following addresses:

(1) Prof. V.A.Fomichov
    Faculty of Mech & Math
    Department of Discr. Math.
    Moscow State University
    119899 Moscow, Russia

(2 copies of an abstract and 1 copy of a preliminary registration
form via air mail; it is recommended to send the materials not later
than on November 30);

(2) International Association for Cybernetics
    av. Sergent Vrithoff, 2
    B-5000 NAMUR, Belgium

(3 copies of an abstract and 1 copy of a preliminary registration
form).

The abstracts must carry the title, author(s) name, affiliation (and
e-mail, if possible) in this order.

Notification of Acceptance: No later than January 30, 1998.

The authors of the accepted abstracts will be informed by the
Secretariat of the Congress about the deadline for submitting in
Spring 1998 the complete versions of their communications and will be
provided with the instructions for the preparation of the final paper
and with the practical information for participating in the 15th
International Congress on Cybernetics.

Submission of Preliminary Registration Forms

Intending authors or participants without papers are asked to return
as quickly as possible via e-mail at the address

ABOUT NAMUR

Namur is a very beautiful and a very calm city situated on the
confluence of the rivers Sambre and Meuse, it has an ancient citadel
with a large park. One is able to reach easily from Namur by train
Brussels (40 minutes), Brugge - one of the pearls of Belgium, and
Luxemburg (2 hours, very nice views).

				CALL FOR PAPERS

DAARRC2 - Discourse, Anaphora and Reference Resolution Colloquium
		Lancaster University, 1 - 4th August , 1998

Invited Speakers -

Branimir Boguraev "Anaphora in Computational Linguistics"
Prof. Michael Hoey "Looking at the Text Linguistics of Certain Words"
Prof. Pieter Seuren "A Discourse-Semantic Account of Donkey Anaphora"

Anaphora and problems of reference resolution have received a great
deal of attention from workers in linguistics, computational
linguistics, artificial intelligence and information retrieval for a
number of decades. Such problems have proved a major challenge for all
of these fields, and a great many differing theories and solutions have
been proposed and implemented with varying degrees of success. This
colloquium aims to fill a need for researchers in this field to meet.
Our hope is that this meeting will allow all of the different strands
of work to be identified, with a view to producing an up-to-date
review of the field.

To this end, a coloquium will take place from the 1st to the 4th of
August, 1998 at Lancaster University, UK, organized jointly by the
Department of Linguistics, Lancaster University and the Institute for
English Studies, Lodz University, Poland. This colloquium is a follow
up to the highly succesful DAARC colloquium held at Lancaster in 1996.
Our aim this time is specifically geared towards encouraging a
cross-fertilization of ideas between theoretical linguistics, corpus
linguistics and computational linguistics.

Papers are requested for presentation on all aspects of anaphora and
reference resolution. The following research areas are of particular
interest, but do not constitute an exhaustive list:

corpus-based studies of anaphora in natural language, statistical
approaches to reference resolution, cognitive and psychological
perspectives, discourse and text-processing perspectives, information
retrieval and other computer applications, pragmatics and anaphor
resolution, and linguistic-theoretical approaches.

Papers reporting work in any language are welcome. The official
language of the conference, for purposes of publication and
presentation, is English. Research may be work in progress, or work
that has already been completed. Abstracts may be sent either
electronically, by email or fax, or by traditional surface mail. Email
submission of abstracts is, however, strongly encouraged. Details
below.

Abstracts should arrive at Lancaster by 1st February, 1998, and
notification of acceptance will be sent by 14th February, 1998. Draft
versions of full papers should arrive by 30th June, 1998. The
proceedings will be published in time for the colloquium.
