ORAGE '98 - INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

SPEECH and GESTURE in multi-modal communication and interaction
Besancon, 9-11 December 1998 - Official Languages : English,

Le principe de ce colloque est issu des travaux du groupe de recherche
"geste et voix", dont le but est de montrer quelles sont les relations
entre les phenomenes vocaux et gestuels dans la communication. Nous
esperons regrouper des chercheurs concernes par ces modalites, quel
que soit leur domaine specifique de recherche, et etablir ainsi de
nouveaux liens pour le developpement des etudes en ethologie
humaine.

The underlying principle governing this Conference springs from the
studies of the Research group "Geste et voix" ("Gesture and Voice")
which has been investigating the relationships between speech sounds
and gestures in human communication. Since the objective of this
Conference is to have an interdisciplinary impact, all researchers
interested in these modalities are welcome whatever their specific
field of research. It is our wish that working partnerships be
established that may contribute to further development in human
ethology.

- gestualite (des entendants, des sourds, langue des signes...)
- vocalite (prosodie, typologie des voix, timbre...)
- relation entre le geste et la voix
- production et perception bi-modale
- modeles semiotiques du geste et de la voix
- mimetisme et iconicite dans le geste et la voix
- universaux et trans-culturalite
- variation et variabilite des phenomenes vocaux et kinesiques
- expression des emotions
- outils methodologiques et instrumentation pour l'analyse du geste et
de la voix

Ces themes peuvent etre abordes au sein de l'acquisition,
l'interaction interpersonnelle et personne-machine, leapprentissage,
la comparaison socio-situationnelle, inter-culturelle et
inter-linguistique, la pathologie, etc.

- Gesturing (hearing and deaf subjects, sign language...)
- Voicing (prosody, typology of voices, voice quality...)
- Relationship between gestures and speech sounds
- Production and bi-modal perception
- Semiotic models for gesture and voice
- Mimetism and iconicity in gesture and voice
- Universals and trans-culturality
- Variation and variability of vocal and kinesic phenomena
- Expression of emotions
- Science and technology in speech and gesture analyses

These subjects may concern acquisition, learning, interpersonal and
man-machine interactions, socio-situational, cross-cultural and
cross-linguistic comparisons, pathology, etc.

 QUELQUES DATES A RETENIR / DEADLINES

- 1er Decembre 97 : envoi de l'intention de participation avec le titre
provisoire (en anglais et en francais).

Attention! L'envoi de l'intention de participation avec le titre
provisoire est obligatoire.  Nous n'enverrons les autres circulaires
qu'aux personnes ayant manifeste leur intention de participer.

- 1er Mars 98 : envoi du resume de la communication (1 page maximum,
en anglais et en francais) qui sera soumis au comite scientifique
d'Orage'98.
- 1er Mai 98 : notification d'acceptation des communications.
- 1er Aout 98 : envoi du texte definitif (en anglais ou en francais).

- 1 December 97: Return of provisional proposals. Please include
provisional title in English and French.

Important Notice! A provisional proposal with title is mandatory.
Further calls for papers will only be sent to those having indicated
their intention in participating to the Conference.

- 1 March 98: Deadline for the submission of abstracts. Abstracts in
English and French must not exceed one page and will be submitted to
the Scientific Committee of Orage '98.
- 1 May 98: Notification of acceptance.
- 1 August 98: Paper submission (in English or French).
