RESEARCH ASSISTANT

A Research Assistant is required to work under the direction of Dr S
Pintzuk on an ESRC-funded project entitled "The Syntax of Old English
Poetry". The project will develop a corpus-based analysis of the syntax
of Old English poetry, and a qualitative and quantitative comparison of
the syntax of the poetry and the prose. The responsibilities of the
Research Assistant will include the syntactic annotation of computerised
Old English poetic texts and participation in the analysis of data.

The ideal candidate will have a first degree in Linguistics (with
introductory courses in formal syntactic theory and/or Germanic syntax)
or in English (with courses in Old English and/or Middle English); a
solid reading knowledge of Old English; good computer skills; and
interests in the formal syntax of Old English, language variation and
change, quantitative analysis, and corpus linguistics. Prior knowledge
of and experience in at least one of the relevant areas will be a
prerequisite to appointment. If qualified, the Research Assistant may
register as a post-graduate student in the Department of Language &
Linguistic Science.

The post is part-time (50% of full-time) for a period of 28 months or
the equivalent, starting on 1 January 1998. The salary offered is
GBP 15,159 per annum, reduced pro rata for part-time work.
