This is a call for an international conference to be held in honour of
Bessie Head at the University of Botswana.

Theme: Language, Literature and Society: Paradigms and Pedagogies.

Venue: University of Botswana at Gaborone, Botswana.
Dates: 16-19 June 1998
Organizers: Department of English, University of Botswana.

The conference will cover research into language and literature, as well
as the teaching of language and literature by focusing on the following
subthemes:

LANGUAGE:
1. Nation, Nationality and Language: Roles Domains, Policies: The
   sociolinguistics of English in relation to other languages in Botswana.

2. Pedagogical Aspects: The responsibility of Universities for English
   in  schools and Teacher Training Colleges.

3. Forms of English in Southern Africa

4. English Studies in Southern African Universities

LITERATURE:

5. New paradigms for the Englishes of African Literature.

6. The Oral Roots of Written African Literature

7. Pedagogical Aspects of Gender Issues

8. Exile Literature: Creating Contexts, Defining an Audience.

9. Madness in Literature

10. Autobiography/Biography: Subjects Positioning in Society.

11. Translation and the Politics of Language: English vs. African
    Languages.

12. Drama, Theatre and Community.

13. The relationship between Fiction and History

14. Paradigms in the Criticism of African Literature.

In addition to topics 7,8,9,10 and 13 where Bessie Head would feature,
the following sub-themes relating specifically to her will also be
focused on:

15. Bessie Head's Short Stories.
16. The Status of Bessie Head in Botswana.
17. Bessie Head's Early Writing
