Assistant professor, tenure-track position of Director of the Program
in Intensive English (PIE) at Northern Arizona University, to begin
August, 1998.


        We are seeking an individual who will promote, build, and
direct the Program in Intensive English (PIE).  The Director will also
be responsible for the training and supervision of TAs, as well as
working with statewide programs.  As an assistant professor, the
individual will also be expected to teach in the MA-TESL program and
conduct applied research. The PIE is part of the English Department,
composed of about 40 full time faculty teaching and pursuing scholarly
interests in composition, creative writing, literature, English
education, and applied linguistics.  Degrees are offered at the
bachelor's, master's, and doctoral level.  Minimum qualifications:
Doctorate in applied linguistics or related field by August 1, 1998;
classroom teaching experience in ESL/EFL; language program
administrative experience; record of teacher supervision/preparation;
knowledge of current instructional technologies; evidence of work with
diverse populations; ability to work collaboratively; and evidence of
scholarly activity and publications.  The Northern Arizona University
community is composed of faculty, staff, and students from a wide
range of culturally diverse backgrounds. Applicants should be
experienced with and committed to work in, and with, such a diverse
population.
        We invite applicants to submit a letter of interest, CV, one
sample publication, evidence of effective teaching, copies of official
graduate transcripts, and the names, addresses, e-mail, and phone
numbers of three references to Dr. Joan Jamieson, Chair of PIE
Director Search Committee, Department of English, Northern Arizona
University, Flagstaff, AZ 86011-6032. The search committee will begin
reviewing files on November 1, 1997, and will consider applications
until the position is filled.  Northern Arizona University is located
in a pine forest at an elevation of 7,000 ft. in the town of
Flagstaff, population about 55,000.
