Subject:  Research position in Computational Semantics

The Institute for Natural Language Processing (IMS), University of
Stuttgart, Germany, is looking for a talented researcher to join its
computational semantics group.

The position to be filled is part of project B9, one of about 14
connected projects making up the SFB 340 (funded by the German Science
Foundation, DFG). The project B9 is concerned with constrained-based,
underspecified semantic representations of natural language texts and
inferencing from those representations.

The candidate should meet a significant subset of the
following requirements:

- solid background in computational linguistics and/or
  computer science

- practical and theoretical knowledge of logic programming
  and constraint-based logic programming

- awareness of the problems of formal semantics for
  natural language

Provided the approval by the funding agency, the position will run
from January 1, 1998, for three years. The salary is according to the
BAT II scale, starting from around DM 60.000, depending on age and
family status.

Subject:  Jobs in Test Development

Law School Admission Council (LSAC), an educational service organization
that develops and administers the Law School Admission Test (LSAT), is
seeking Test Specialists for both limited-term and permanent
appointments.  Successful applicants will be responsible for the review
and revision of reading comprehension and informal and deductive
reasoning test questions for the LSAT.  In developing such questions,
Test Specialists must consider both quality and sensitivity to the
diversity of the LSAT-taking population.

Other duties include monitoring the performance of contractors who write
questions and assemble tests as well as participating in the review and
development of informational and test preparation materials.  Successful
applicants may also participate in and apply research related to the
LSAT.

Educational qualifications include an M.A. in English, literature,
classics, philosophy, linguistics, history, political science,
languages, or some related field requiring strong reading, reasoning,
and analytical skills.  Ph.D. or doctoral-level work preferred.  A broad
background in liberal arts, training in formal and/or informal logic,
and experience in college teaching, editing, and/or test question
construction, are desirable. Precise and fluent use of the English
language, demonstrated organizational skills, the ability to work
independently, and the ability to meet deadlines are necessary.

The University of Arizona Department of Anthropology invites applications
for a tenure-track position in Linguistic Anthropology at the Assistant
Professor level, beginning fall 1998.  PhD required.  Topical and
geographical areas open, although preference will be given to candidates
that link linguistic to cultural interests, particularly health
discourses, Hispanic sociolinguistics, & language, culture and cognition.
