Subject:  Lang. Acq. methodology

Hi,
	I need help/tips/advice on doing language acquisition data
collection.  I want to do an experiment involving "Standard" American
English wh- question production. I need help on two fronts:

1) What are some good experimental paradigms for eliciting wh- questions
of various types?  I am interested in running an experiment with kids from
ages 24mos to 5 or 6 years old and just gathering data on wh- sentence
production.  The hypotheses I want to test are:
	>onset of wh- q. productivity is sex-linked.
	>onset of wh- q. productivity is age linked
	>onset of wh- q. productivity is linked to non-linguistic factors
	besides age and sex, e.g., amount of social interaction with
	peers, number of siblings at home, relative age of child to
	siblings, economic class, home dialect, number of languages spoken at
	home.

2)Here's the harder part: I have one day care of about 20 kids for my
experiment.  They are all white, middle class 3-4 yr. olds.  How do I find
more kids at day cares/after school programs/pre-schools?  Is there a
schtick that linguists normally use to get in the door?  I have access to
this other place via one of my professors who knows the director
personally.  How can I establish connections with more little kids?  Cold
call day cares and pre-schools and tell them my story?

Subject:  Pragmatic vs. speech acts

Dear Colleagues,

I have decided to post this query on behalf of a friend of mine who is
inquiring about the distinction between speech acts and pragmatic acts. What
constitutes a pragmatic act (examples would be welcome as well) as opposed
to a speech act, which to me is a well-defined concept. I would strongly
appreciate your replies and I promise to post a summary.
