Subject: Job announcement (reminder)
The Dept. of Linguistics at SUNY Buffalo seeks to fill a
tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor or beginning
Associate Professor level (subject to final budgetary approval); the
position will begin September 1, 1998. We are looking for someone
engaged in substantial and ongoing field research in one or more
non-Indo-European languages (preferably one from the Americas) and
demonstrated research expertise in phonology. The successful
applicant will be expected to contribute to Cognitive Science at UB.
S/he will be expected to teach introductory and advanced courses at
the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Review of applications will begin October 15, 1997. Applicants
should send CV, letter of application, names of three references, and
samples of their work to Search Committee, Department of Linguistics,

COMPUTATIONAL GRAMMARIAN
English
The Natural Language Group at Microsoft is looking for computational
grammarian for English. The position will be located on the Microsoft
central campus in Redmond, Washington, USA. This is a great
opportunity to work with a dedicated product group that is focused on
productizing linguistic technology.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The grammarian's primary responsibilities include developing, testing,
and maintaining a computational grammar for English, in accordance
with the overall architecture of the Microsoft Natural Language
Understanding system. The initial emphasis will be on enhancing the
grammar for syntactic analysis.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The grammarian's qualifications should include experience in
linguistic development and research as well as software development;
familiarity with natural language processing; a flexible approach to
linguistic theory; and an advanced degree in linguistics, computer
science, or a closely related discipline. Native proficiency in
English is assumed; practical experience with NLP implementation
issues is highly desirable.

COMPUTATIONAL LEXICOGRAPHER
Japanese
The Natural Language Group at Microsoft is looking for a computational
lexicographer for Japanese. The position will be located on the
Microsoft central campus in Redmond, Washington, USA. This is a great
opportunity to work with a dedicated product group that is focused on
productizing linguistic technology.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The lexicographer's primary responsibilities include developing and
maintaining the morphological rules and data for the language, in
accordance with the overall system architecture used by the Microsoft
Natural Language Understanding system; checking, updating, and
maintaining the information in an online lexicon and knowledge base
for that language; and testing the analysis and generation systems for
that language in various ways.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The lexicographer's qualifications should include experience in online
dictionary development, some programming experience, keen interest in
lexical issues, and at least a BA/BS degree in linguistics or a
closely related discipline. Native proficiency in English is assumed.
A practical orientation is highly desirable. An advanced degree in
linguistics and/or significant programming experience would be a plus.
