Subject:  Reading Research Position

The Scientific Learning Corporation is looking for a Ph.D.-level reading
research specialist capable of designing and overseeing research projects
relating to the perceptual and cognitive aspects of learning to read in
reading impaired and in normal children and adults.

Developing an effective brain science-based remediation program for
reading-impaired children and adults.

Participating as a member of an exciting, active research group comprising
scientists working on language learning and related impairments from
psychophysical, neurological, disabilities research, and cognitive science
perspectives.

Joining a rapidly growing, privately held San Francisco-based company with
a commitment to and plenty of resources for conducting good research.

Assisting in the development and maintenance of an on-line  productivity
library of templates, models, and tools.

Assisting on highly technical issues associated with  development of
interactive training games.



The ideal candidate will have...

A sharp and open mind.

A background in cognitive psychology, neuropsychology or child psychology.

Experience working with children with learning disabilities.

An understanding of theoretical issues related to reading, dyslexia,
learning to read, phonological awareness, visual psychophysics and
perceptual learning.

An understanding of experimental design, data analysis, and cognitive and
educational assessment models.

Experience working in a clinical or educational laboratory, or an experimental
classroom setting.

A background in language and language learning.

NOTE: Both entry-level scientists and experienced scientists with a track
record working in this field are encouraged to apply.

	The Department of Linguistics at The University of Iowa invites
applications for two tenure-track positions in linguistics beginning
August 1998.  Candidates should have both (1) research and/or teaching
experience in second language acquisition or English as a second language
AND (2) expertise in another area of linguistics, such as syntax,
phonology, morphology, first language acquisition, etc.  The positions are
expected to be at the assistant professor level; however, exceptional
candidates may be considered at the associate professor level.  First
consideration will be given to those candidates who will have completed
the PhD degree by the time of appointment.

The Department of English, Linguistics, and Speech at Mary Washington
College is searching for one or more lecturers to substitute for a
faculty member going on leave mid-semester (around the beginning of
October 1997).  The courses which need to be filled are:

LING 302	Introduction to sociolinguistics
