Travel Information
Transportation from Airports
San Jose International Airport is the closest airport to Santa Cruz.
Travel time by car is approximately 45 minutes. Travel from San
Francisco International Airport will require at least an additional
hour of travel time, and additional delays may be experienced due to
airport construction.
Santa Cruz Airporter vans provide door-to-door service leaving every
two hours from San Jose International to Santa Cruz, 9 am to 11 pm.
Cost: $30.00 one-way, $55.00 round-trip (if paid in advance).
Reservations are strongly recommended. Call 1-800-497-4997 in the U.S.
or 1-831-423-1214 outside the U.S. for more information. Return
service is from fixed stops in the Santa Cruz area, including from the
UCSC campus.
Greyhound buses run three times daily between San Jose International
Airport and the Greyhound Bus Station (next to the Santa Cruz Metro
Center) in Santa Cruz. This service requires a transfer and takes
approximately 2 hours. For more information, call 1-800-231-2222.
ABC Transportation provides limousine service, including a driver to
meet you at the airport gate and assist with baggage, for $63 one-way
from San Jose airport. Call 1-800-411-6083 in the U.S. or
1-831-477-0170 outside the U.S. for more information.
San Francisco International Airport: Travel time is approximately 1
hour 45 minutes. Additional delays may be experienced due to
construction at the airport. (We recommend flying into San Jose
International Airport if possible.)

Transportation to the Conference
UCSC is accessible but inconvenient without a car, so car rental or
ride-sharing is recommended. The UCSC campus is located approximately
three miles, or 15 minutes by car, from downtown Santa Cruz and the
conference hotel. The campus can be reached in the following ways:
By bus: Route #1 University buses offer service approximately every 7
minutes on weekdays and every 15 minutes on weekends between the UCSC
campus and the Santa Cruz Metro Center (920 Pacific Avenue, next to
the Greyhound Bus Station). One of these buses, Route #1
University/Lower Bay, provides service once an hour between the Metro
Center, the West Coast Santa Cruz Hotel, and the UCSC campus. Use the
bus stop at the corner of Bay Street and West Cliff Drive to and from
the conference hotel. The bus departs Bay and West Cliff a couple
minutes after the half-hour. At UCSC, use the bus stop for Cowell &
Stevenson Colleges (across from the Bay Tree Bookstore parking
lot/construction site). Route #1/Lower Bay departs from this stop at
approximately :45 each hour. Bus schedules are available at the Metro
Center. Fare: $1.00 per ride, $3.00 for a day pass.
By car: From San Jose on Highway 17 or from the south, take Highway 1
north through town (Highway 1 becomes Mission Street in town); turn
right (inland) on Bay Street, one light after Laurel Street. Coming
from the north on Highway 1, turn left on Bay. Bay runs directly to
the east entrance of the UCSC campus. (In the opposite direction, Bay
Street runs directly to the ocean and the conference hotel.) Parking
permits are required at UCSC from 7 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday
and can be obtained for $4.00 per day from the Transportation Office
(take the first right past the Information Booth and follow the
signs). Parking permits are not required on campus on Saturdays and
Sundays. Follow the signs to the conference site at Cowell and
Stevenson Colleges.

SALT 9 Accommodations
A block of rooms has been reserved at the West Coast Santa Cruz Hotel
(formerly the Dream Inn) at a special conference rate of $89.00 per
room (2 queen beds or 1 king bed) for Thursday 2/18 through Monday
2/22, plus an additional 10% hotel tax. This group rate is available
3 days prior and three days following the conference, on a space
availability basis. All rooms at the West Coast Santa Cruz Hotel have
exceptional ocean views. Free continental breakfasts and free hotel
parking is provided to guests. Please call the West Coast Santa Cruz
Hotel to make your own reservation. In order to obtain special rates,
you will need to reserve by credit card no later than February 1,
1999, mentioning the "SALT 9 Conference" at UCSC as the name of the
group. You may cancel without penalty up to 48 hours in advance.
Check-in begins at 4pm and check-out time is 11am.

The West Coast Santa Cruz Hotel is approximately 3 miles from campus,
located near the intersection of Bay Street and West Cliff Drive. Bay
Street runs directly from the hotels at the ocean to the main entrance
to UCSC and is bisected by Highway 1/Mission Street.

Student "crash" space:
A campus apartment has been reserved to be shared (co-ed) by
low-income students at a rate of $75.00 per night. The apartment has
a kitchen, living room, one bathroom, and two bedrooms--one with a
queen-size bed and the other with two twin beds. There is also a
pull-out couch which sleeps two. We hope to share cost among a
minimum of 5 students and a maximum of 8 students per apartment for an
individual cost of about $10 to $15 per night (sleeping mats and bags
may be needed). Please contact Davina Ramirez at

Book Exhibit: SALT 9 will host a Publishers Book Exhibit beginning
Friday afternoon, February 19 through Sunday afternoon, February 21 in
the Stevenson College Silverman Conference Room (nearby both session
