Opening for the position of English teacher in the Department of
Communication Studies, Faculty of Humanities, Ibaraki University,
Japan.
1. Field of Study: This position is open to all applicants who have
an M. A. and/or Ph. D. in T.E.S.L. and/or other closely related
fields such as Linguistics, English, English Literature, Speech
Communication, and so on. At least 2 years in teaching ESL/EFL is
required.
2. Teaching Load: The applicant selected will be expected to teach a
total of five 90 minutes English conversation and reading/writing
classes plus 2 Jr./Sr. seminars of 90 minutes and will be working in
collaboration with other teachers.
3. Date of Employment: October 1st, l999
4. Term of Employment: Two - three years, non-renewable.
5. Qualifications: The position is open to all candidates whose
native language is English. The applicant selected must have an M.
A. and/or Ph. D. degree in his/her field of study described above.
6. Documents required:
1. Curriculum vitae: should include a detailed
description of the applicant's academic and professional
background, languages spoken, date of birth, nationality,
home and office addresses as well as telephone/fax numbers
and email address if available.;
2. Photocopies of all academic degrees, diplomas and
certificates;
3. List of publications;
4. Up to three major published papers or books.

ADDENDUM:
1. Ibaraki University:
Ibaraki University is a national university located in
Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture. Mito is approximately 120
kms. northeast of Tokyo. The population of the city is
240,000. Mito is the prefectural capital of Ibaraki.
Transportation from Tokyo to Mito is 1 hour and 20
minutes either by car or bus (Joban Express Highway), or by
express train (available every 30 minutes). By local train
(available every 30 minutes), it takes about 2 hours. The
university is located about 20 minutes from Mito Station.
Ibaraki University is comprised of the Faculty of
Humanities, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Science,
Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Agriculture. The
Faculty of Humanities together with the Faculties of
Education and Science is located on the Mito campus. The
Faculty of Engineering is located on the Hitachi Campus in
Hitachi City and the Faculty of Agriculture is located on
the Ami Campus in Tsuchiura City.
The total number of undergraduates at Ibaraki
University is about 6,000 with about 280 additional graduate
students. There are about 600 faculty members and 400
administrative and other employees in the university.
3. Academic Calendar:
In Japan, the university year starts on April 1st and
ends on March 31st. The following brief list highlights
important dates in our university year:
Early April - Entrance Ceremony
Early April - First semester starts
July - September - Summer vacation
Mid-Late July - First semester examinations
October - Second semester starts
Late December - Early January - Winter Vacation
Mid-Late February - Second semester examinations
Early March- Early April - Spring Vacation
Late March - Graduation Ceremony
4. Salary:
Salary will be determined according to the length of
the applicant's post-graduate and/or professional career.
In Japan, the monthly salary is supplemented by three
bonuses in June, December, and March. The total amount of
these three bonuses is approximately 5 months salary. In
national universities in Japan, salaries are calculated
according to the rules set down by the Ministry of
Education. The minimum salary is 260,000 yen per month. An
additional 5,000 yen per month is paid per month for each
year of experience. ($1.00 amer. = 125 yen approximately).
5. Travel expenses:
Travel expenses for the selected applicant will be
covered by the University. The University will also provide
travel allowances (approximately the same amount of
allowance provided for the applicant) for dependent
immediate family members accompanying the applicant.
The selected applicant is required to pay travel costs
in advance. Reimbursement takes approximately 3-4 months.
6. Housing:
All faculty members qualify for subsidized governmental
housing. Selection for this housing is competitive and
there is a waiting period which can be quite long.
Therefore, most faculty members choose housing in private
apartments and then, move to subsidized housing if and when
it becomes available. Housing costs for private apartments
in Mito City range from about 50,000 yen per month for a
one bedroom, one kitchen apartment to over 80,000 yen per
month for a 2 bedroom, kitchen and dining room unit. An
initial deposit of five months' rent covers non-refundable
handling fees, the first month's rent and two month's
refundable deposit. The monthly housing allowance is
approximately 27,000 yen.

Faculty of Letters at Kansai University, one of Japan's largest private
universities located in Osaka, Japan, invites applications for a
tenured (Prof. or Assoc. Prof.) position in Japanese language beginning
in April, 1999. Candidates should be a native or near-native speaker
of Japanese, a Ph. D. in a relevant discipline such as Applied
Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Japanese Linguistics
(discourse analysis, pragmatics preferred), or Language Pedagogy, and
have at least five years of teaching experience in the field preferably
at graduate level. Applicants should also demonstrate a strong
commitment to research and teaching for both undergraduate and graduate
students. Duties of the position include training of Japanese language
teachers at a graduate level as well as teaching undergraduate Japanese
language courses.
