Chinese Studies

Applications are invited for the tenured position of Lecturer in the
Department of Asian Languages from persons who possess, or who are
close to completing, a Ph.D. degree in an area of Chinese Studies, and
whose present research interests are also in Chinese Studies.
Applicants should have native or near-native fluency in modern
standard Chinese (Mandarin), and should also be able to communicate
with native or near-native fluency in English. Teaching duties will be
principally in the subject area of modern Chinese language. Some prior
teaching experience at the tertiary level and an appropriate
publications record are desirable.

anticipates having two openings for


"LEKTOR/LEKTORIN" IN ENGLISH
(one British English and one American English)

I. Job description:
 	
During semesters (April to July, October to February):

* teaching of English for academic purposes to German students of
English (16 hours per week): idiomatics, grammar, stylistics,
pronunciation, etc.  The ability to teach one course on British
institutions and cultural/regional studies will be an advantage.

* preparation and correcting of language tests and intermediate exams

Between semesters:

* development of teaching, exercise, and test materials (language lab)
for students of English

* evaluation of teaching materials/preparation for the semester

* preparation and correction of exams ("Staatsexamen")


II. Contract offered:

* 100% of BAT IIa

* Time frame: from October 1, 1999, until July 31, 2001.
(Renewable, subject to review, for up to 2 additonal years).

* 16 hour teaching load with additional duties listed above is taken
to represent the current legal norm of 38.5 hours per week ;
approx. 25-28 days paid leave p.a. (depending on age) in addition to
public holidays.
		

Note: Depending on age, the approximate monthly income under this
arrangement is around DM 3500, after social security deductions
(pension and unemployment) and health insurance contribution. The net
salary will depend on individual tax status.


III. Applicant's profile:
	* native speaker of  English
	* excellent command of German (Honours degree level)
	* at least MA or other postgraduate degree, preferably PhD,
	  in English/German and/or Linguistics/Applied Linguistics
	* interest in EFL curriculum/materials development
