IEP Director Position Opening

The University of Illinois at Chicago is seeking a director for its
established IEP and associated ESL programming. The position involves
overall responsibility for the academic, service and fiscal success of
the unit, for leading an academic and professional staff of 20 in a
team oriented environment, for maintaining and enhancing the program's
reputation for academic excellence and service, for delivery of
existing programs, courses and services, and for development of new
and innovative programming.

Responsibilities:
Develop, deliver and evaluate existing and new instructional programs
and courses; develop and oversee program budgets; maintain fiscal
control while ensuring program quality; recruit, hire, supervise,
evaluate, and coordinate professional development of academic and
administrative staff; plan and implement comprehensive annual
marketing plan aimed at local and international constituencies;
prepare annual, fiscal and statistical reports; develop and maintain
excellent working relationships with program faculty and staff, and
with personnel in associated campus units; represent the program on
campus, to outside constituencies and within the profession;
participate actively in local, regional and national professional
organizations.

Qualifications:
M.A. TESOL (Ph.D. preferred) Extensive IEP management experience in a
university setting including developing and managing self-supporting
budgets, supervision of academic and nonacademic personnel, curriculum
development and implementation, student recruitment, marketing, and
student counseling; ESL teaching experience and applied knowledge of
current theories and issues relevant to language teaching and
learning; experience using word processing, spreadsheet and database
applications for administrative functions; experienced in integration
of educational technology and CALL; knowledge of U S Immigration and
Naturalization regulations; capable team leader and responsive team
member, highly organized, energetic, and flexible; excellent written
and oral communication capabilities and intercultural and public
relations skills; must be proactive and employ vision and creativity
in leadership; commitment to quality instruction, a student-centered
philosophy, customer service, and to the development and maintenance
of a collaborative and supportive work environment; evidence of
continuing professional commitment; willing to work long hours,
including evenings and weekends; some travel also required.

Subject:  Program Director for Linguistics, Visiting Scientist at NSF


The National Science Foundation is seeking applicants for the position
of Program Director for Linguistics, to begin Fall, 1999, or as soon
as possible thereafter.  Appointment will be as a Visiting Scientist,
initially for a period of one year, normally renewable for an
additional year.

The Program Director for Linguistics is responsible for administering
the review of research proposals in linguistics and the language
sciences that are submitted to the National Science Foundation, for
recommending and documenting actions on the proposals reviewed, for
dealing with administrative matters relating to active NSF grants, and
for maintaining regular contact with the research community and
providing advice and consultation to persons requesting it.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in linguistics or a related discipline,
and must be active in scientific research in some area of linguistics
or the language sciences.  Six or more years of research experience
beyond the Ph.D. is required for appointment as Program Director.
Salary is negotiable, and is comparable with academic salaries at
major U.S.  institutions.

The National Science Foundation is located in Arlington, Virginia,
immediately across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C.  The
metropolitan Washington area, besides being the seat of the U.S.
Government, is noted as a cultural center and as a growing center of
high-technology industry.  A wide variety of types of housing is
available within close proximity to the NSF offices.
