Dear Colleagues,

This is a call for papers.  We are planning to put together a book on
the cross-cultural aspects of teaching English as a Second Language.
The book is intended to be a collection of current articles which
will acquaint teachers of ESL with the importance of understanding
the role of culture in both the teaching and learning of English as a
second or foreign language.  The target audience of this book will be
students in a teacher-training program which could be housed in a
linguistics department, English department, education department, or
communication department, etc., and therefore the students may have
various degrees of sophistication in linguistics.  Consequently, we
are looking for articles that are accessible to students who may not
have had course work in linguistics but should have some acquaintance
with studies in the following areas:

1. the relationship between language and culture
2. the role of acculturation in language acquisition
3. culture shock and assimilation
4. prejudice and stereotypes against non-native speakers in the USA
5. the study of speech acts, e.g. apologies, compliments, discourse
patterns, etc.
6. cross-cultural miscommunication, verbal and non-verbal
7. cultural comparisons of values, assumptions, attitudes
8. teachers and students as culture bearers
9. the teaching of culture - content and approach

This is not an exhaustive list of possible topics.  If you have
suggestions for other topics that should be included, we would
welcome them.  We are hoping to put together a book that would make a
reasonable amount of reading in a semester course, preferably
articles of 2000-3000 words each.

FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS

The Canadian Association of Applied Linguistics will hold its 2000 conference
as part of the Congress of the Social Sciences and Humanities at the University
of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta from May 25 to May 27 2000. Members are invited
to submit abstracts for single papers as well as symposia. Present themes
include globalization as well as technology and Second Language Acquisition.
Other colloquia themes can also be included.

ABSTRACT REQUIREMENT

   1.Abstracts for single papers should be no longer than 150 words. They can
include
     references but should not contain a bibliography. Abstracts for symposia
should
     include a general description of the symposium (150 words) as well as a
description
     of each panel member presentation (150 words).
   2.In order to help ensure anonymity, abstracts should not contain excessive
reference
     to its author's publications.

     Abstracts should contain

   a.a title (for the symposium indicate a main title as well as the title of
each
     presentation)
   b.an indication of the main arguments involved
   c.a statement of conclusions reached and an assessment of their significance


ABSTRACT SUBMISSION SHEET

   3.A separate sheet is to be sent along with the abstract.
     It should include

   a.the name of the author(s) or the name of the coordinator as well as the
name of each
     presenter for the symposium
   b.their affiliation
   c.their e-mail address as well as their postal address
   d.the title of the paper or symposium to be presented as well as the title
of each
     presentation

   4.It should also mention if the author(s) require(s) audio-visual material
