Thank you for the many messages in support of the idea that our
cookbook honor the memory of Jim McCawley. We also appreciate the
suggestions for titles and organization that some of you have sent:

1. From Randy Allen Harris,
"How about, _The James D. McCawley Memorial Cookbook_? "
2. From Theo Vennemann,
"I knew Professor McCawley quite well and tasted his dishes.
I believe he would prefer a dedication, rather than potentially
being held responsible for other linguists' cooking ideas."
3. From Peter Daniels,
"A note on organization: Jim did three annual food-related events.
   (1) Bastille Day pot-luck party,... (2) Hangul Day, in honor of
the only holiday in the world celebrating a linguistic event, ...
and (3) St. Cecilia's Day, a party at which the music of composers
with round-number [birth] anniversaries was performed by linguists,
where "linguist" was defined as 'someone who can sing or play'...
I suggest that the cookbook be arranged according to these three quite
Borgesian categories (however difficult that may prove in practice), and
that Jim would appreciate the result. The title ought to resemble in
affect those of his well-known books, "Everything Linguists Always
Wanted to Know about Logic ..." and "An Eater's Guide to Restaurant
Chinese"; Jerry Sadock might be able to make the perfect suggestion."

We are thinking of going with either "The James D. McCawley Memorial
Cookbook" or "What You Always Wanted to Know about Food . . . : A
Cookbook Dedicated to James McCawley". We would like your reactions
and any suggestions you may have. We also need someone to volunteer to
write a brief dedication. If you would like to volunteer, or if you
have any comments or suggestions, Helen would be delighted to hear
from you. (hdry at linguistlist.org)

Thanks to those of you who have already responded; as always,we
appreciate your suggestions and comments. We look forward to
hearing from more of you.
