Position: TTS Language Developers
Department: Engineering

Description:

You will be part of a team developing new language capabilities for
SpeechWorks' Speechify TTS system - based on AT&T technology. This role
involves a combination of linguistics and speech technology to develop
industry leading speech synthesis products for worldwide deployment.

Responsibilities:

* Design phonemic inventories for new target languages
* Identification and collection of speech corpora
* Develop pronunciation and prosody models for new languages
* Assist in text processing for new target languages
* Assist with developing language independent algorithms for the core
TTS engine
* Working as part of a team of language and speech technology experts

Requirements:

* MA or equivalent experience in Linguistics with specialization in
phonetics, phonology or computational linguists
* Desire and ability to work as part of a team
* Knowledge of scripting languages (e.g. Perl). C/C++ programming skills
an advantage
* Competence in UNIX or NT (ideally both)
* Excellent oral and written communications skills in English and at
least one other major European/Asian language
* Be able to work with a minimum amount of direct supervision
* Instill confidence in your abilities
* Work well with other language and technical experts in speech
technology and application development

As a member of the Speechify development team, you will design and
implement key components of SpeechWorks' industry-leading text-to-speech
software used by application developers for creating state-of-the-art
applications that require speech synthesis. You will work closely with
SpeechWorks experts in speech synthesis. This position requires a
versatile individual who wants to be challenged, can communicate well,
and can contribute in all areas of product design, development, and
deployment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Design and implement components of the Speechify software, including
the client and server interfaces, synthesis engine, and development
tools

- Implement the software across a range of target operating systems

- Provide feedback on software architecture and functional
specifications

REQUIREMENTS:

- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills

- Expertise in C & C++ development

- Strong sockets and multi-threaded programming fundamentals

- A quick but careful design and programming style

- Fluency in Unix and Windows NT

- BS in Engineering or BSCS or equivalent experience

- Be able to work with a minimum amount of direct supervision

- Identify functionality versus schedule tradeoffs under pressure

- Work well with other technical experts in software development &
speech synthesis

- Must be able to focus on several tasks at once juggling priorities as
needed

- Additional experience with Java, ActiveX, HTML programming desirable

- Experience in computer telephony, telecom industry, or speech
synthesis a plus

REQUIREMENTS:

- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills

- At least two years of software QA experience

- C programming experience

- Fluency in UNIX and Windows NT

- Knowledge of UNIX shell scripts

- BS in Engineering or BSCS or equivalent experience

- Must be able to work with a minimum amount of direct supervision

- Ability to analyze and solve complex problems quickly and creatively

- Ability to learn and contribute quickly

- Must be able to focus on several tasks at once juggling priorities as
needed

- C++, Visual Basic, Java programming experience a plus
