Routledge are pleased to announce the publication of :

'Discourse and Discrimination : Rhetorics of Racism and Antisemitism'

Martin Reisigl and Ruth Wodak, both at Institut fur Sprachwissenschaft, Vienna,
Austria

`No other book on racism combines the urgency of today's news with
the comprehensiveness of a robust empirical base and a rigorously developed
theoretical framework...This is an important book for anyone with interests
from the discursive theory of racism to today's Austrian/European political
 crisis.'- Ron Scollan, Georgetown University

'Discourse and Discrimination' is a study of how racism, antisemitism and
ethnicism are reflected in discourse. Reisigl and Wodak first survey five
established discourse analysis approaches, discussing the strengths and
weaknesses of each, and then provide their own model of critical discourse
analysis. Using this model, the authors present three case studies. While the
focus of these studies is on racism in Austria, the approach is relevant for
the study of discrimination in any context.

Drawing on a wide range of sources, from political speeches and legal documents
to newspaper articles, television broadcasts and everyday conversations -
Reisigl and Wodak question why even today, in a post World War II society,
racism and antisemitism are still virulent.

Subject: Written Discourse Analysis: Textual Interaction, M. Hoey

Routledge is pleased to announce the publication of :

'Textual Interaction : An Introduction to Written Discourse Analysis'

Michael Hoey, University of Liverpool, UK

'Widely encompassing in its examples and comprehensive in its
theoretical coverage, this important book is full of insight, offers clear
methodology, puts a coherent new position on text, and is, throughout, written
in a most engaging manner' - Gunther Kress, Institute of Education,
 University of London

'Textual Interaction' provides a clear and cogent account of written
discourse analysis. Each chapter introduces key concepts and analytical
techniques, describes important parallel work and major issues, and suggests
how to apply the ideas to the teaching and learning of reading and writing.
In this activity-based book, Hoey analyses a wide variety of narrative texts
and argues that, in the interaction between writer and reader, the reader
has as much power as the writer.
