NEW ZEALAND LINGUISTIC SOCIETY CONFERENCE

30 August to 1 September 2001

It is not too late to register for this conference! It may appeal to
linguists footloose in the South Pacific region after the Melbourne
historical linguistics gathering, or to anyone on a pilgrimage to the
New Zealand locations where _The Lord of the Rings_ was filmed...
Information about Christchurch and the Canterbury region can be found
at http://www.canterburypages.co.nz/ .

INFORMATION FOR PARTICIPANTS (AND POTENTIAL PARTICIPANTS)

***Anyone who has not yet booked accommodation at College House
(details below), and would like to do so, should contact Andrew
Carstairs-McCarthy <a.c-mcc at ling.canterbury.ac.nz> by 6 August.
Anyone who has not booked for the conference dinner on 31 August, and
would like to do so, should similarly contact Andrew
Carstairs-McCarthy by 24 August.***
Payment for both can be made at registration (see below).

Programme and abstracts

The conference programme (subject to revision) can be viewed on the
Web at http://www.massey.ac.nz/~wwlingui/NZLS/2001conf.html . A
booklet of abstracts will be given to participants at registration
(or possibly mailed earlier).

Venue

College House, 100 Waimairi Road, Ilam, Christchurch, New Zealand
(adjacent to the campus of the University of Canterbury).

How to get there

1.	By road

The University campus is on the western side of the city. Drivers
approaching it from the north can avoid the city centre by turning
right on to the ring road (Johns Road) in Belfast, signposted
'Airport'. On reaching the roundabout closest to the airport (with
the airport exit on the right), take the first (left) exit, on to
Memorial Avenue. At the fourth set of traffic lights, turn right on
to Ilam Road. On reaching the University campus (large buildings and
University Drive on the left), pass on the right a large playing
field and the University Staff Club (set back among trees). First on
the right after the Staff Club is Homestead Lane. Turn into
Homestead Lane and go to the end (minding speed bumps). Turn right
on to Waimairi Road. College House is about 150 metres on the right,
beyond Bishop Julius Hall..

Drivers approaching from the south can left turn on to the Airport
ring road at Russley Road, and turn right into Memorial Avenue at the
airport roundabout as described above

2.	By air

A taxi from the airport will cost around $20 (NZ). There are also
buses into the central city ($4) and to Memorial Avenue, near the
Ilam Road junction (see above) ($2). No bus from the airport runs
directly past the campus.

Registration

A registration desk will be open in College House from about 4.00 to
6.00 pm on Wednesday 29 August and also from 8.30 am on Thursday 30
August. If you have not yet paid in full, please be ready to do so
on registering. We can accept cash, or cheques made out to "NZ
Linguistics Society, Canterbury Branch", either in New Zealand
dollars drawn on a New Zealand bank, or else in other currencies
drawn on a bank of the country where that currency is used. We
cannot accept credit cards.

Charges (in New Zealand dollars: NZ$1 =3D US$0.43 approx) are:

Registration:	nonstudents	$100 (or $90 for members of TESOLANZ)
students	$72 (or $62 for members of TESOLANZ)
The registration fee covers a buffet lunch and morning and afternoon
tea or coffee each day, plus wine and cheese on the evening of 30
August.

Accommodation at College House (see below):
$38 per night for bed and continental breakfast

Conference dinner:	$32 (not including drinks)
For details of the time, place and menu, see below under 'Eating'.

Accommodation

Accommodation (for those who have booked it by 6 August) is in
College House, where the conference is being held. On arrival,
please go to the conference registration desk (if it is open) or the
College House office. On Wednesday 29 August, this office will be
open for the issuing of keys until about 9.30 pm.

Eating

For those staying in College House, continental breakfast will be
available from 7.00 to 9.00 am.

During the conference, morning and afternoon tea and a snack lunch
will be provided in College House for registered participants. On 30
August, after the afternoon session, there will be wine and cheese.

On Friday 31 August, the conference dinner (for those who have booked
by 24 August) will take place in the University Staff Club at 8.00
pm. The bar at the Staff Club will be open from 7.00 pm. Wine (by
the bottle or glass), beer and juices for drinking during the dinner
can be bought at the bar (no BYO). The menu consists of:
Canapes (in downstairs lounge and bar area)
Choice of main dishes (all served with new potatoes, vegetables, tossed salad):
Chicken breast stuffed with pinenuts and brie, with cranberry sauce
or	Beef fillet on kumara cake, with a red wine and mushroom sauce
or	Kumara cake with grilled brown mushrooms, walnuts and gruy=E8re
Baked citrus cheesecake with a berry couli
	Coffee or tea, after-dinner mints

Other places to eat on the campus are:
the Student Association cafeteria (open 8.00 am)
Cafe 101 (snacks, cappuccino, etc.) in the Commerce Building
(open 8.30 am)
Cafe Brasilia in the Student Association Building, at the
Ilam Road end of University Drive, opposite the Staff Club (open 8.30 am)

The following restaurants are very near the campus:
Tandoori Palace Indian Restaurant (licensed), Ilam Road, near
junction with Rountree Street, about 100m south of Homestead Lane
Foo San Chinese Restaurant, Rountree Street, near junction
with Ilam Road (very popular, bookings necessary, phone 348 4921)
Several other restaurants can be found at Church Corner, at the
southern end of Waimairi Road (about ten minutes' walk from College
House).

In the city centre are many restaurants, e.g. on Worcester Boulevard
between Rolleston Avenue and Cathedral Square. The city centre can
be reached by bus; there are stops on Ilam Road and on Creyke Road
(northern edge of campus). Buses return from Platform B at the bus
depot, signed 21 (Ilam) or 23 (Merrin). However, the service is not
very frequent and a taxi is probably preferable.

Public telephones

In College House, there are telephones in every room that can be used
for making local calls. For other calls, there are telephones in the
foyer that accept Telecom prepaid phone cards (which can be bought
from the office).
