Dear Linguists,

Through the Calls For Papers and Conference Announcements, LINGUIST
informs the linguistics community about regional, national, and
international conferences that take place around the globe. In the
year 2001, LINGUIST posted over 930 Calls and 285 Confs! By publishing
hundreds of conference announcements and calls for papers per year,
LINGUIST provides a very valuable and central location for linguists
to obtain conference information.

Because of the nature of the field of Linguistics, we realize that the
linguistic community is world wide. However, until the coming of the
age of the internet, it was much more difficult, even impossible for
some, to be involved with their international colleagues. LINGUIST
creates that professional link, and it is evidenced by the
increasingly global nature of conferences. In fact, conference
organizers have told us that their conference attendance has become
more international, and the general quality of the papers has improved
because of the increasing number of submissions. Perhaps this
increase in international participation is due in part to the hundreds
of calls and conferences that are posted each year by LINGUIST List.

Nevertheless, LINGUIST List's existence is fully reliant upon the
support it receives from the discipline. That support is both the use
of the List and monetary. Although Wayne State University and Eastern
Michigan University provide generous administrative support, we also
require a growing student staff which is funded primarily by
subscriber donations.

This year we will need $48,000 to continue to fund our student editors
and continue to keep LINGUIST running. So far in our Year 2002 fund
drive, we have received $27,957 thanks to the generosity of the
persons and institutions whose names appear at the bottom of this
page. If you found out about a conference through our postings, or if
you successfully replied to a call, please show your appreciation by
making a donation. In return, we'll show our appreciation by
continually improving our web site and our services. Without the
support we've had over the years, we would not be in the position we
are today, having our own server with up to date software to send
issues, and our own machines on which to edit the issues. Over recent
years, the number of companies offering free internet service or free
personal web hosting has declined to almost zero in (at least) Europe
and America; this reflects the very high cost of running any web-based
organization, LINGUIST List included, and the difficulty in keeping it
free from subscription charge.

So please give us your support and go to
http://linguistlist.org/donate.html to send us your pledge. From
there you have the choice of donating straight away by credit card
using our secure form, or you can send us a cheque later. If you do
send a cheque, please make it payable in US dollars; we get charged
about $50 a time to convert currency (no such problems with a credit
card).

Alternatively, you can hit "Reply" to this message and send us your
pledge right now by email, prior to sending your cheque. Then we will
be able to list you immediately as one of our donors; and we may be
able to reach our goal (and halt these Fund Drive messages) a bit
earlier. The address to send cheques is as follows:

The LINGUIST Editorial Support Fund
c/o Helen Aristar-Dry
Dept. of English
Eastern Michigan University

As a 501(c)3 organization, LINGUIST qualifies for corporate
donation-matching programs; and, of course, your donation is tax
deductible.

Don't forget that in return for a donation of $25 or more, we would
like to send you a gift. Whisphered rumours from the fashion industry
suggest that a $30 LINGUIST List T-shirt is going to be the must-have item
for this summer*. You can see them modelled at
http://linguistlist.org/premiums.html, along with the other gifts we
have to offer such as baby T-shirts and tote bags. Do let us know in
your pledge what you would like and remember to let us know your
mailing address.

We at LINGUIST really do appreciate your support. We could not
continue without you.

With our sincere thanks,

The LINGUIST Crew:

Anthony, Helen, Andrew, Karen, Naomi, Heather, James, Michael,
Zhen-Wei, Richard, Karolina, Dina, Renee, Steve, Marie, Gayathri,
John, Ljuba, Terry, Simin, Tomoko.

* There is the possibility of us mishearing. They *were* very quiet
  rumours, after all

Subject: Read about Student Editor, Renee!

Dear subscribers,

We thought you'd like to hear from some of the students your funds are
supporting. So this year each fund drive issue will include a brief
paragraph from one of our editors telling you, their sponsors, about
their work with LINGUIST.

And now, few words from Renee Galvis...

2001 was an exciting year for me, as I began work on my M.A. in
Linguistics at Wayne State University. Ironically, I discovered the
program through LinguistList, which I found while searching the web!
You can imagine my excitement when I had the opportunity to join
LINGUIST as an editor later the same year! I suppose you could say
that LINGUIST got the "two-for-one special" when they let me join the
crew; our newest little Linguist, Niko, was born December 15, 2001!
(You can see him modeling the Baby Linguist T-Shirt at
http://linguistlist.org/premiums.html but I'm not a proud Mami!)

With LINGUIST, I have had the opportunity to learn new skills through
editing as well as increase my knowledge of the field of linguistics
itself, and as one of the newest editors for LINGUIST I feel honored
to work with such a fabulous crew. More than anything, I feel (as I
am sure you do) connected to and a part of what is going on in
linguistics throughout the world! Long live Linguist List!
