invites applications for the position of Lecturer in Translation
Technology/Language Technology.

SALIS has a strong record of teaching and research in the use of
technology in areas related to language and translation, with its
involvement in teaching and administering the B.Sc. in Applied
Computational Linguistics in collaboration with the School of Computer
Applications and various modules on technology provided on the
undergraduate and postgraduate Translation Studies programmes offered
by the School. SALIS staff have been involved in several research
projects in the area, including the Eurotra Project, where the team
focused on the development of term banks, and the recently-established
Princip Project, which focuses on racism on the Internet. Other
projects based in the School focus on Web-based language learning.

Candidates for this position must have a demonstrable commitment to
research in an area of translation technology or language technology.
Such areas include, among others, Machine Translation, Corpus
Linguistics, CALL and Terminography. Candidates should be close to
completing a PhD or should already have done so.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach, as appropriate, on
the degrees in Applied Languages, Translation Studies or Applied
Computational Linguistics. He or she will join a vibrant research team
based in SALIS, but with strong links with colleagues in Computer
Applications and Electronic Engineering. Supervision of theses at
undergraduate and postgraduate levels will form part of the duties of
the appointee, who will also be expected to make a contribution to the
School's administrative work and to the fulfilment of the School's
strategic objectives.

School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies (SALIS)

The School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies (SALIS) is
located on the main Dublin City University campus and forms part of
the Joint Faculty of Humanities with the School of Communications and
the Humanities departments of St Patrick's College.

The School currently has some 673 registered full-time students taking a
range of programmes which include the following:
- the BA in Applied Languages
- the BA in International Business and Languages (joint programme with
DCU Business School)
- the BA in International Marketing and Languages (joint programme with
DCUBS)
- the BSc in Applied Computational Linguistics (joint programme with the
School of Computer Applications)
- the Graduate Diploma/MA in Translation Studies
- the Graduate Diploma/MA in Intercultural Studies
- the Graduate Diploma/MA in Conference Interpreting

The major languages taught in the School are French, German and
Spanish.  These languages are offered on the programmes listed above
as well as on other degree programmes in DCU, including programmes in
Science, Engineering and Computing. Japanese is also offered at both
undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The major research fields in the School include the study of the
culture and society of countries associated with the School's main
languages, as well as Translation Studies, Intercultural Studies and
Language Studies.

Natural Language Processing, Corpus Linguistics and CALL are some of
the specific areas of special interest in SALIS.

Interdisciplinary research is a strong feature of the School's
research activity, reflecting a commitment to a broadly-based
understanding of the nature of language, culture and human
communication.

Management Structure

The School Executive consists of the Head of School and the
Chairpersons of the three School Committees, which are: the School
Development Committee, the Teaching/Learning Committee and the
Research Committee.  The Executive is responsible for the overall
management of the School and for decisions on budgeting, staff
allocation and strategic initiatives. The Head of School and School
Executive work in collaboration with the School Committees and the
Convenors of each of the Language Sections to ensure the smooth
running of the School.
