 ==========================================================================
The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html.

This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment
standards of various countries.

Subject: Computational Linguistics: at the Joint Research Centre of the EC

The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) has an opening
for a one-year position (auxiliary agent), starting approximately in
May 2001. The applicant will contribute to Language Technology
projects at the JRC-Ispra site near the Lago Maggiore in Northern
Italy.

The candidate will work in a multi-disciplinary and international team
of scientists and developers and will mainly contribute to two
projects. The first one is concerned with the automatic assignment of
keywords from a multilingual thesaurus to text, using statistical
methods and a manually indexed text collection. The second project has
the aim of gathering potentially user-relevant documents from the
internet and to analyse, classify and store them. The ideal candidate
is independent, has a practical approach and knows how to discover,
use, integrate and optimise various tools.

Requirements:
- Citizenship of a EU country
- Working knowledge of English, French or Italian
- Degree in Computational Linguistics or related areas
- Programming experience

The candidate should have good skills in several of the following areas:

- PERL programming
- Programming in Java, C++, etc.
- Statistics for automatic classification, clustering and similar
applications
- Experience of working with large corpora or data collections
- Experience with applications such as indexing, search engines, etc.
- Experience with multilingual and cross-lingual NLP applications
- Knowledge of several EU and Eastern-European languages
- Web technology, CGI, Apache, HTML, XML
- Relational databases (Oracle, MySQL), SQL
- Windows NT and UNIX
- Technology overview and report writing

Remuneration depends on age, family status, experience and current
residence. The salary for a single person currently residing outside
Italy is 3.000 Euro per month net or more (after taxes).

We offer interesting work in an expanding team and in an attractive
setting. The JRC employs altogether 2400 staff from many different
countries. 1800 of these work at the Ispra site in Northern Italy,
about 60 km West of the city of Milan.

If you have questions, please have a look at the web site
http://www.jrc.it/langtech and contact Ralf Steinberger
(ralf.steinberger at jrc.it). If you are interested, please send your
application before Sunday 3 March 2002. Electronic applications are
preferred.
