Applications are invited for a PhD Research Studentship to work on an
exciting new research project on Mixed Mode Communication.  This
project is funded by Avaya Labs Research, NJ.

This project is developing a framework for the analysis and evaluation
of multimodal communication in technologically-mediated interactions.
System parameters, such as frame rate and bandwidth, do not predict the
effectiveness of different media in supporting communication.  This
project is exploiting the techniques and approach of conversation
analysis as a basis for analysing the communicative properties of
different media.  Our analysis is focussing on the pattern of
communicative problems that arise in multimodal communication, assesment
of their severity and the processes involved in resolving them.

The studentship covers tuition fees and a stipend of £9,250 pa.

This post would be appropriate for a graduate (2.1 or higher) in
Psychology, Linguistics or a cognate discipline.  Good analytical
skills are required and expertise in Conversation Analysis or
Psychology of Language and Communication would be particularly
useful. The student will work on developing the analysis of
communicative breakdowns and applying this to the design of
technologically-mediated interactions.  This work is expected to be
done in close collaboration with the Avaya Labs research team and may
involve travel to the US.
