ISCA Tutorial and Research Workshop on
Pronunciation Modeling and Lexicon Adaptation for
		      Spoken Language Technology

		      www.clsp.jhu.edu/pmla2002

Aspen Lodge, Estes Park, Colorado, USA
			September 14-15, 2002

An ISCA ITR-Workshop on Pronunciation Modeling and Lexicon Adaptation
will be held prior to ICSLP 2002, in the Denver, Colorado area. The
purpose of the workshop is to present the state of the art in
pronunciation modeling for Automatic Speech Recognition and explore
new applications in speech synthesis and accented speech.

Papers are solicited concerning all aspects of pronunciation modeling
and lexicon adaptation for speech processing, synthesis, and
recognition. Of particular interest are papers describing work in the
following four topics:

 * Novel algorithms for pronunciation modeling in ASR
 * Applications of pronunciation modeling to speech synthesis
 * Corpus-based analysis of pronunciation variation and/or its
   effect on speech technology applications
 * Applications of pronunciation modeling to accented speech and
   computer aided language learning

The workshop will present invited lectures, poster sessions, and panel
discussions on these topics. Registration will be limited to ensure
ample opportunity for discussion.

Four-page extended abstracts are invited on the above topics. Authors
may not submit the same paper for the workshop and ICSLP, although
papers describing related work but with a different focus are
permitted. All accepted technical papers will be presented as a
combination short lecture and poster; final papers may be expanded in
length up to six pages for inclusion in the workshop proceedings. The
extended abstracts and final papers must follow the workshop style
guide. The language of the conference is English.

Scope: This conference is the first in the series "Theoretical and
Experimental Linguistics" and aims at bringing together theoretical
work in contemporary syntactic theory with work on the syntactic
properties displayed by the various types of language disorders. It
will center around four core concepts of Generative Linguistics: (i)
Functional Categories (ii) Word Order and Movement (iii) Dependencies
within and across Sentences and (iv) Interfaces, and will compare the
behavior of normal and impaired language with respect to each of them.
It seeks answers to questions such as: What constitutes a deviation
from a normal system in current syntactic terms? How likely is it to
find in normal language patterns and behavior encountered in language
disorders? What do impaired varieties of language have to contribute
to contemporary syntactic theory?

Financial support:

- A certain number of grants will be available for young researchers
