Job description

You teach and conduct research in the field of sociolinguistics in
general, and particularly directed at linguistic theories on language
contact and multilingualism. Proceeding from this expertise you
contribute to educational development for the benefit of the various
programs in het bachelor-mastersystem from the Faculty of Arts, among
which a socially oriented Master's in Linguistics entailing the
program "language development and multilingualism". Both
apprenticeship and thesis supervision constitute an important part
within the program. Your research links up well with the thematic area
by the same name within the research institute Utrecht institute of
Linguistics OTS (UiL OTS) as well as with the research conducted by
the Landelijke Onderzoekschool Taalwetenschap (abbreviated LOT; the
Netherlands) Graduate School of Linguistics.)

Job requirements

Candidates with a PhD in linguistics, with in particular expertise in
the field of the theory on language contact and/or multilingualism, or
demonstrable affinity with these areas. We are looking for candidates
who are able to find a productive connection between theoretical
linguistic research and the issues surrounding language contact and
multilingualism in general. Your research abilities are evident from a
list of (inter)national publications. You command demonstrable
didactic skills and possibly have some experience with the use of
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in instruction. You are
willing to obtain the required education and research certificates
(basiskwalificaties onderwijs en onderzoek) as described in the
regulation WP FLOW (on the jobs, career policy and recognition of
scientific staff.) Non-Dutch candidates are expected to acquire a good
command of the Dutch language within the first period of appointment.

You may be asked to give a trial lecture as part of the screening.

Organisation
Located within one of Netherland's oldest and largest universities,
Universiteit Utrecht's Faculty of Arts has nineteen degree programs in
the languages and letters of Europe and the Middle-East, the various
arts and media, and in history. Research programs are organized into
two institutes with extensive national and international
links. Special attention is paid to interdisciplinary collaboration,
the use of new media, and the quality of teaching. The Faculty is
housed in the historic centre of the city and enjoys excellent
facilities.

Terms of employment

A 0.8 fte (32 hour) fixed-term position (max. 2 years) with the
prospect of a permanent position. Salary consistent with experience,
minimum  2769 euros and maximum 4325 euros gross per month for a
full-time position, consistent with scales 11 and 12 of the CAO
(collective labour agreement) for Dutch Universities.

If you do not hold a PhD or do not expect to hold a PhD within the
foreseeable future, you will be offered salary scale 10.  The
University Utrecht offers excellent fringe benefits.
