THE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG

The University of Hong Kong is at the international forefront of
higher learning and research, with more than 100 teaching departments
and sub-divisions of studies, and more than 60 research institutes and
centres. Current enrolment includes 10,000 undergraduates and 7,000

Research Assistant Professor in Experimental Phonetics
(Ref.: RF-2003/2004-21)

Applications are invited for appointment as Research Assistant
Professor in Experimental Phonetics in the Department of Linguistics.
The appointment will initially be made on a two to three-year
fixed-term basis, tenable from as soon as possible and with the
possibility of renewal.

The Department has a well-equipped Phonetics Laboratory and a
professional quality sound recording studio.  Its staff have been
working on the phonetics of Chinese dialects, Cantonese intonation,
contrastive Chinese/English prosody, speech recognition and
text-to-speech conversion.  Further information can be obtained at

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Phonetics, preferably awarded within
the last 5 years.  They should also have an active and proven record
of research and publications.  The appointee will help develop
research in the area of Experimental Phonetics.

Annual salary is on a 4-point scale (which is subject to review from
time to time at the entire discretion of the University).  The
appointment will usually be made on the first point of the scale
[attracting contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a
retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary]:
HK$518,580 - 631,080 (approx. USD1=HK$7.8).

At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15.5% of gross income.
The appointment carries leave, and medical and dental benefits.
