We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at

Dear list members,

I am currently working on a Ph.D project which involves
sociolinguistic fieldwork in Ireland. I was told by a friend that it
is imperative to obtain written consent from the people you interview
for American publishers (the thesis is for a German university where
you have to publish your findings). As I have never heard about this
with European publishers (I have the oral consent of all people to use
the material for my Ph.D., of course) I would be interested, if anyone
has any experience with publishing research based on interviews. Do I
need written consent, and if so, what does it have to look like
exactly?

Thank you for your help,
Astrid Fiess

Have there been any spectrographic studies published which confirm
that words such as "rider" and "writer" differ in vowel length before
the flap?

Thank you,
